Re-establishing Connections After a Year of Social Distancing by Meagan Waite

POSTED BY on June 13, 2021

The year 2020 was hard on all of us in so many different ways. Some of those effects are not as noticeable as others. We have all suffered, possibly more than we realize, from the “social distancing” requirements of COVID19. We human creatures thrive on interaction, and when it wanes, we suffer.

What is a Tradition? A Ritual?

Tradition is defined as the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. These usually have some kind of symbolic meaning or special implication. A ritual is a religious or solemn ceremony or, particularly applicable to families, an act or series of acts regularly repeated in a set precise manner. Examples include: Taco Tuesdays, a window wave each morning as dad leaves for work, or a daily ‘mission’ to work on as a family.

Studies show that traditions and rituals can help in a number of ways. Not only can they help us learn greater self-control and attention, but they help increase emotional stability and build confidence.

How Do Traditions and Rituals Help Individuals and Families?

Studies show that traditions and rituals can help in a number of ways. Not only can they help us learn greater self-control and attention, but they help increase emotional stability and build confidence. They help us better handle grief due to a loss and disappointment or frustration from the negative experiences in life and they lead to stronger families. Research has shown that rituals are the very foundation of family bonding and strong relationships.

Not Sure How to Get Started?

My Discovery Destination’s Summer Passport Program 2021 brings together businesses, community organizations, city departments, schools, key leaders, and families in a fun, creative way to reinforce family bonds, and when families are stronger, communities are stronger! Getting started could not be easier! The Summer Passport 2021 program offers over 100 FREE family experiences available on two platforms–web and app–to accommodate differing needs and interests of families. Regardless of which one you choose, the ready-to-play adventures can help keep your kids’ bodies active and minds engaged while also building healthy family relationships one adventure at a time.

Does It Really Work?

Kim R., a My Discovery Destination! parent, has this to say about the program, “I have always tried to build memories with my kids and spend quality time with them. I learned about My Discovery Destination! last November, and I love how their message of building strong family relationships and making memories fit right into what I was already trying to do with my kids and hubby. One of the things I love about the program is how easy it is–they have activities that take no effort to do to others that are more involved, so I can pick and choose depending on the day. I also have a son with anxiety, and through the program we have been able to do activities that I would not have thought to do that have helped us as a family talk and build better relationships. My kids love the hunts because they love to try and be one of the top winners, so they are working together to get the hunts done. One last thing I love is how My Discovery Destination! does all the work of finding and posting things going on in the community that are free or fun to do as a family.”
